In big news for the mayoral race, Michael Walters, former two-term councillor intends to run for Mayor of Edmonton.

Two-term city councillor
Presumed to be running — not confirmed

Rumours have been percolating for some time about a large upcoming mayoral announcement, and I now have it from enough sources that I consider to be reliable to share this information.

Many thought Michael Walters might take a run at mayor back in 2021, even going so far as to call him the "heir apparent", but he opted not to run for Mayor at the time and instead chose to focus on his family, as he shared with Speaking Municipally at the time.

This news comes after a devastating week of gaffes from Tim Cartmell’s campaign. He finds himself cash-strapped, despite raising over half a million dollars, and he couldn’t pass a key infill vote because he refused to call in to council on his scheduled vacation.

The Edmonton Journal reported today even candidates running with Tim Cartmell’s Better Edmonton party are losing confidence in Tim Cartmell’s leadership.

The entry of Michael Walters into this race represents a seismic shift in the race, that up until now many were regarding as a two-horse race.

Look for an official announcement in the coming weeks.
