It's William Hawrelak
Edmonton's mayor was removed from office by the supreme court!
...in 1965. It's William Hawrelak!
We know Edmonton's longest-serving mayor from the river valley park named after him, but he's got a storied history. He was removed from office, twice, for gross misconduct and illegal business dealings.
But even after that, he only appeared to come back stronger, winning election after election.
He also won the election of 1963, often referred to as one of Edmonton's dirtiest election, after which there was a near-riot at City Hall as student protesters were assaulted by those loyal to Hawrelak.
Enjoy a bit of history, before you enjoy the park next month when it reopens!
