The UCP's Minister of Education is starting to panic.
This is part of an email that Demetrios Nicolaides sent out begging for volunteers to defend him against his recall petition.
Nicolaides' email to supporters, November 13.
In 2023, he only won Calgary-Bow by 623 votes.
If you had asked me a year ago whether I thought a recall petition would ever be successful in the province of Alberta, I would have told you no. Absolutely not. The bar is just too high.
But then again, I also thought that the Forever Canadian petition would fail with a whimper. And it absolutely smashed its required 300,000 signature goal, with over 450,000 people signing their names.
Now, with the UCP embattled in scandal after scandal, and the education minister taking the lead on trashing Albertans' charter rights, I think we're in a singular moment where this could actually work.
- Nicolaides' margin in 2023
- 623
- votes for the NDP candidate in 2023
- 12,500
- signatures the recall petition needs
- 16,000
The NDP candidate in 2023 got 12,500 votes. The recall petition needs 16,000 to go forward.
It's a really high bar to clear, don't get me wrong. But if we clear it, this seat flips to the NDP.
And if we prove that it can work, well, when one domino falls, they all go tumbling.
Too often in politics, we sit around all in a tizzy saying, “This government is doing us wrong, but there's nothing we can actually do about it.”
In this moment, there is something we can do about it.
Demetrios is saying that if his volunteers don't show up, we might topple this government.
Buddy, don't threaten me with a good time.
