There's a funny effect where the bigger the production, the more harshly I tend to judge it. Perhaps this falls victim to that. There's a big cast, good production, lots of costumes and props and clearly a lot of work put in.
I wanted to love it. I just couldn't.
The plot didn't resonate with me, the characterizations seemed flat and the dialogue stilted. I don't know whether that was actual stilted dialogue, or their insistence on using (only somewhat) period-accurate language, but I thought we moved past that as a society. Hamilton can have a black president rap, so we can just have gold miners speak normally.
I was excited for a big-production 90-minute musical at the Fringe. This wasn't it though.
