★★☆☆☆ Soup and Hogan's 16th Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest

This premise got me immediately in the door. A musical about eating hotdogs and hyper-americanization, Rock, Flag, Eagle - I've never been so excited.

Unfortunately, the show itself doesn't live up to the premise. In terms of songs there were a couple standouts, but most of them were bland numbers that didn't further the story set atop four basic piano chords. The motifs about hyper-americanization were referenced, but didn't have any material effect. And many of the big jokes (the one about the snake for example) fell completely flat due to lack of follow through (actually the snake was nothing and the whole conversation was pointless).

There's a good show here, but it'll only be found with another year in the workshop and new sets of eyes, it's not on display in the theatre.

The Edmonton Journal, however, gave it a 5-star review.
