Edmonton is finally getting a fair shake for hosting provincial buildings.
In the 2026 Alberta Budget, Grants in Place of Taxes, or how the Provincial Government pays their property taxes, has finally been restored in full after Jason Kenney slashed it to 50% in 2020.
Edmonton has the majority of the province's taxable structures, so slashing these grants hurt Edmonton much more than other municipalities, forcing Edmonton to unfairly subsidize provincial operations.
Unfortunately the $100M in back-taxes? We're not going to be collecting that. Maybe it's time to repo the Legislature?
