Jo-Anne has quietly been a standout this term.
When she was first elected, I'll be honest, I didn't expect much. But she's quietly become a standout councillor.
Jo-Anne consistently falls on the right side of issues in my view, but never, it seems, for ideological reasons. She supports bike infrastructure and traffic calming initiatives not out of some "leftist 15-minute city agenda" but because it's good planning that makes lives better for those in her community.
She pushed for police accountability not due to a woke agenda, but because she sought good value from the largest line item in our city budget.
She's also discerning and forceful when asking questions of administration. City Administration can often give flowery language non-answers to questions, and Jo-Anne does not let them off the hook. She politely, but forcefully, requires plain language answers, delivered in public.
She's recently taken on a role on the police commission, and during her tenure the very strained, toxic relationship has improved dramatically.
She's got a kind of "tough grandma" energy, that she leverages to the absolute best effect, and is a critical teammember in council chambers. I'm excited to see her back.
Plus, anyone getting Sarah Hamilton to swear at them is probably doing something right.
